Fungoni Mineral Sands Project

UTU JAMII's involvement in the Fungoni Mineral Sands Project showcases our diverse expertise and commitment to social responsibility — combining women's rights training, dialogue facilitation, and grievance resolution.

"Before UTU JAMII came, there was confusion and anger. The mining project brought uncertainty, and our voices felt unheard. Then, they arrived, listened to our worries, and built bridges between us and the company."

— Bi Aisha, Community Leader

What we did

We established NPA-VAWC committees across 11 villages surrounding the mining project, safeguarding women's rights and giving communities a structured channel for raising concerns. Through skilled navigation of complex partnerships between communities, developers, and authorities, constructive dialogue replaced conflict — and fair resolutions blossomed where grievances once festered.

Approach

  • Women's rights and gender-based-violence training
  • Establishment and capacity-building of community committees
  • Mediation between corporate operations and community concerns
  • Inclusion of children and youth in safeguarding frameworks

Outcomes

  • 11 villages with empowered NPA-VAWC committees
  • Constructive community-corporate dialogue replacing prior conflict
  • Equitable grievance resolution channels
