Introduction:

UTU JAMII is proud to play a significant role in the Mwadui Tailing Facility Resettlement Project, supporting communities affected by the 2022 failure and ensuring their rights and well-being are safeguarded throughout the resettlement process. Our Services:

Through our Synergie Consult Contract, UTU JAMII provided a comprehensive range of services, including:

  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Providing feedback on the development of the compensation and resettlement process aligned with IFC standards.
    • Engaging the community regularly on upcoming steps and incorporating their feedback.
    • Facilitating financial literacy training for affected people (PAPs).
    • Identifying and supporting vulnerable groups with specific needs.
    • Assisting with tenant relocation, rental allowance, and transportation arrangements.
    • Validating movable assets, business losses, and livestock.
  • Entitlement Framework:
    • Engaging all stakeholders, from regional level to PAPs, in the entitlement framework development.
    • Facilitating the disclosure process, explaining national laws and IFC standards to PAPs and the company.
    • Participating in the selection of a follow-up committee.
    • Drafting a report summarizing the entitlement framework and stakeholder contributions.
  • Safeguarding Women, Children, and Families:
    • Advocating for their well-being in planning and compensation measures.
    • Introducing joint bank account options to protect families.
    • Addressing the specific needs of women food vendors affected by the project.
  • Vulnerable People's Plan:
    • Identifying and verifying all vulnerable PAPs.
    • Consulting with them to understand their specific vulnerabilities.
    • Developing and implementing a tailored support plan for their needs.
  • Compensation Process Support:
    • Delivering financial literacy training to all PAPs.
    • Assisting with drafting and explaining compensation agreements in a clear and accessible manner.
    • Providing ongoing support throughout the compensation process.
    • Facilitating compensation for different categories of PAPs based on their impact.
    • Assisting with top-up and business loss compensation preparations.
    • Implementing a robust monitoring, support, and record-keeping system.
  • Grievance Management:
    • Employing participatory methodologies to resolve grievances throughout the process, both in temporary shelters and relocated communities.
    • Addressing grievances related to resettlement, compensation, and other project aspects.

Our Approach:

UTU JAMII's work in Mwadui was underpinned by the principles of Participatory Action Research and Assessment (PARA). We believe in actively involving communities in decision-making and ensuring their voices are heard and respected.
